Why Information Products are Not the Answer

By Brian Clark

Here’s a multiple choice question for you.

Would you rather:

A. Spend a year or more producing a continuous flood of free content before even small amounts of money come in;

B. Slave to create an information product that takes months or longer to finish and may already be outdated by the time it’s released; or

C. Create a training program that allows you to start collecting money immediately while you move forward developing the majority of the promised content.

That last one sounds pretty good to me. And the really cool thing is that it’s also the best way to actually teach someone.

How to Defeat the Enemy of Information Entrepreneurs

Creating an information “product” is like talking at someone, rather than with them. And the development time involved often means your information is no longer current by the time you’re done, assuming you get past the procrastination that keeps you from getting it done at all.

But the real advantage of teaching-as-you-go is the ability to develop content that’s better suited for learners. By listening to feedback, observing conversations between the learners and collecting assessment data, you’ll be able to adapt your content to the needs of the people paying you for knowledge, rather than blindly guessing and hoping for the best.

This is one reason why it’s better to sell access to a membership-based learning environment than it is to sell a static product. Subscribers get a much better experience for their money, and you get to beat the main enemy of the information entrepreneur—the failure to get the “product” done.

Teach Online Like It’s the Real World

Remember, the goal of a virtual learning environment is to maximize the true power of the Internet and try to replicate how teaching works in the real world.

A good teacher in the classroom doesn’t prepare every lesson in advance and mindlessly spew it at you. Instead, he develops a curriculum and then adapts and improvises over the semester based on how the students respond and perform.

You can’t start with nothing… you need to know what you need to teach and have a very good idea of how you’re going to do it. Plus, you need a good amount of introductory materials to get people started and to see how they react.

But the best way to develop the very best content is to listen to your first set of students and produce accordingly. You’ll find that the majority of people will get stuck in the same places, and that’s incredibly valuable information to have for a profit-minded teacher.

And getting paid to create your “product” doesn’t hurt, either.

Why Does it Matter if They Learn?

Many people view information sales as an exercise in convincing them to buy and hoping they don’t demand a refund. But that’s not the most profitable way to look at it, and it’s certainly not an approach that leads to a real business.

While there are exceptions, selling one product is generally not a good information business. As you’ll see when you join the Teaching Sells training program, successful information publishers rope you in with an introductory product, and move you down the “funnel” towards other, higher-priced offerings.

They use a succession of products to try to create a relationship.

Virtual learning environments create a relationship from day one, no matter what your business model. Not only do people get more out of being a part of a community of learning, they buy more when they actually “get” the materials.

Modern marketing is not about market share, it’s about share of customer. When you teach someone something new, you’re naturally expanding your market share in that customer, because new knowledge allows people to explore the benefits of knowledge, which you can help them explore with additional offers.

In short, teaching sells.
